Engine 13 is a single engine company assigned to the Fourth Battalion of the Oakland Fire Department. We are located in the Fruitvale District in Oakland. This is one of the most densely populated areas in the city, and has one of the largest Hispanic communities in Northern California. This area is continuing to expand and is one of the most rapidly growing areas in Oakland, both in population and new buildings, with dozens of construction projects ongoing at any one time. However, we also have some of the oldest buildings in the city, with a high number of late 1800's era Victorian Houses, Victorian Apartments, Residential Hotels, 1900 era Bungalows, as well as heavy industrial and commercial areas. We also have a very busy BART station and railroad tracks running through the district. In addition we cover a large area of Interstate 880.
We have consistently been among the busiest Engines in the city, with an average of 3000 runs and 150 Working Structure Fires a year. Unfortunately for us, a majority of our responses occur between the hours of 8 PM and 5 AM, making us the dubious winners of the "Up Most at Night Award".
