Capt Skins retires in a Blaze of Glory December 30th - After more than 30 years in the Oakland Fire Department, Captain Mike Hoskins (Skins) retired from the Oakland Fire Department. On his last shift as the Captain of 6 Truck, they ran two second alarm fires, one with a rescue, a shooting victim at the front door of the fire house and many other calls. Good luck and happy retirement Mike! B Shift on Small House Fire December 30th - At 1133 hours, units were alerted for a reported chimney fire at 2320 E22nd Street. 13 Engine arrived with light smoke showing from a 2 story single family dwelling. Fire was found to be in the walls and chimney space. Units opened up and quickly extinguished the fire. Box Alarm - Engines 13, 4, 18 Truck 2 Batt 4 B Shift on House Fire December 28th - At 0508 Hours, units were alerted for a reported house on fire at 2902 Carmel Street in the Upper Laurel District. Battalion 4 arrived first with smoke showing from a single family dwelling. Arriving next, 13 Engine advanced a line to find a back room on fire, with access problems due to debris in the house. With the assistance of other units, fire was knocked. After extensive overhaul, units returned home after 3 hours. Box Alarm - Engines 16, 13, 18 Truck 2 Batt 4 Xmas Day Man VS Train December 25th - At 0920 Hrs, a Rescue Assignment was dispatched for a reported Man under a BART Train (Bay Area Subway System). 13 Engine arrived to find a young male deceased and under the train. Units moved the train, and left the scene in care of BART PD. Rescue Assignment - Engine 13 Truck 6 Rescue 1 Batt 4 Second Fire of the Day for C Shift December 23rd - At 0701 hours, units from the 3rd and 4th Batt were again alerted for a house on fire at 2715 Pleasant Street. 18 Engine arrived with smoke showing from a single story, single family dwelling. 13 Engine arrived and assisted with fire attack and overhaul. Units cleared in 1 hour. Box Alarm - Engines 16, 13, 17 Truck 6 Batt 4 C Shift on Apartment Fire December 22 - At 1318 hours, 4th Battalion Units were alerted for a reported apartment on fire at 1706 19th Ave. 4 Engine arrived with smoke showing from a multi-story apartment building. 13 Engine assisted with hose lines and fire attack and returned after 1 hour. Box Alarm - Engines 4, 13, 16 Truck 2 Batt 4 B Shift Second Due on Apartment Fire December 21st - At 0859 Hours units were alerted for a reported apartment on fire at 2237 E15th Street. 4 Engine arrived with heavy smoke showing from the second floor. 13 Engine arrived and assisted 4 Engine with fire attack and searches. 13 cleared in about 1 1/2 hours. Box Alarm - Engines 4, 13, 16 Truck 2 Batt 4 Second Due on House Fire December 15th - At 0730 Hours, units were alerted for a reported house on fire at the corner of Foothill Blvd and High Street. 18 Engine arrived to find a house/Psychic Business with heavy smoke showing. 13 Engine assisted with fire attack and overhaul, and cleared in about 45 minutes. Box Alarm - Engines 18, 13, 17 Truck 6 Batt 4 Promotions and New Members 13 Engine would like to congratulate new Lieutenant Demmond Simmons and welcome the new A shift Engineer Maurice Miranda transferring from 16 Engine B shift. Some incidents the occurred during the last few months (not a complete list) photos to be added soon: November 16th - 21959 51st Ave - House Fire November 11th 510 E12th Street - 5th Alarm Warehouse Fire October 22nd - 3000 Nicol Ave - House Fire October 15th - 1373 E33rd Rd - House Fire 7th Alarm Warehouse fire October 12th - 582 Hegenberger Road Massive Warehouse Fire Dispatch/Operation Audio and Photos House across street from Firehouse catches fire October 9th - While 13 Engine was on a medical call, a Firefighter detailed to another house was pulling out of the parking lot at the quarters of 13 Engine when he heard a loud explosion across the street. At this point a person had ran up to his car and was yelling that the house across the street was on fire. The FF turned around to find heavy smoke and fire from 1306 Derby Ave (Firehouse address 1225 Derby). At this point, 13 Engine had cleared the medical and arrived on scene. A large attached outbuilding was fully involved with extension to the kitchen and living rooms. Units quickly knocked the fire with 2 lines and after overhaul crossed the street to go back to quarters. Box Alarm - Engine 13, 4, 18 Truck 6 Batt 4 17 Engine was Extra Engine due to 13 out of position B shift on House Fire October 4th - At 01935 Hours multiple stills (calls) were received for a house on fire at the corner of 24th Ave and East 24th Street, or the three corners area (Where 13, 16 and 4's box areas all merge). 16 Engine arrived right in front of 13, reporting a single family dwelling well involved. 16 and 13 stretched a 300 ft 1 3/4 line and knocked the fire, which was an arson fire set in multiple rooms with some type of accelerant. There was enough left in the house to cause flareups of fire when hitting it with the fire stream. As the house had lath/plaster and blown insulation, overhaul was extensive, and units cleared after 2 1/2 hours. Box Alarm - Engine 13, 16, 4 Truck 2 Batt 4 Special Alarm - Engine 17 B Shift on 4 Alarm Mutual Aid to Alameda City September 20th - At 0020 hours 13 Engine was alerted t cover in at Alameda City Fire Station Number 2, while enroute, fire alarm advised 13 to respond to the fire along with other Oakland units. The fire was in the 3rd and 4th Floor of an occupied 4 story 40 unit apartment building. 13 Engine arrived on scene, and was assigned to assist units on the fourth floor with fire attack and searches, while other Oakland Units assisted with fire attack on the 3rd and 4th floors as well. After this, 13 and other Oakland Companies began overhaul. 13 Engine cleared in 3 1/2 hours. Oakland Units assigned - Engines 13, 4, 12 Trucks 2, 7 Batt 3 First Due Apartment Fire for A shift September 19th - At 0632 hours, units were alerted for a reported Apartment on fire. 13 Engine arrived with nothing showing from a 2 story Multiple Dwelling. Upon investigation, units found a working fire in an apartment. 13 and 16 Engines stretched a line, and the fire was quickly knocked. 2 Truck opened up and searched. Units cleared in 2 hours. Box Alarm - Engines 13, 16, 4 Truck 2 Batt 4 Wave of Violence hits the Fruitvale September 16th - Four murders occurred in 13 Engine's area last night in less than 3 hours. The first two were a double shooting in the 2700 Block of East 22 St., where 2 young men were shot by an automatic weapon. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene. Just before midnight, 13 Engine responded for a reported stabbing, and found a man with multiple stab wounds and a large knife still lodged in his back. This patient later died of his injuries. While at this call, another shooting occurred in 13 Engines areas as well, and another company responded. This victim also died. This was reportedly in retaliation for multiple murders in West Oakland the day before, bringing the weekly death toll in Oakland to 7 murders. C shift on House Fire September 12th - At 1434 Hrs, 16 Engine was alerted for a reported outside fire. When they arrived they found a working fire in a 2 Story Home, with extension into the next door exposure building, and requested a Box Assignment. As units arrived on scene, 16 Engine had already began an interior attack as well as having an additional line stretched for the exposure. 13 Engine arrived on scene and assisted with fire attack and searches. The fire had started from a debris pile outside, and extended into the house via the crawl space, and involved multiple rooms and the eves and side of the exposure building. 13 Engine cleared after 3 hours. Box Alarm - Engines 16, 13, 25 Truck 6 Batt 4 Special Call - Engine 17 9-11-01 Never Forget! It may be 4 years since almost 3000 people including 343 Firemen , 23 NYPD, and 75 PAPD were murdered in New York City, Pentagon City, VA and Somerset, PA but we must not forget what happened. Some members of 13 Engine were, and are, directly affected by these events, but all members mourn the loss of our brothers and sisters. B Shift on Multiple Dwelling Fire August 11th - At 1552 hours, 13 Engine was drilling with 6 Truck on low angle rescue at 18E - 6T when multiple calls were received for an apartment building on fire at 3634 Foothill Blvd. 13 Engine arrived on scene with fire showing from a 3 story multiple dwelling and one burned out front. 13 Engine along with 4 Engine, knocked the fire in about 10 minutes, which was mostly on the exterior. The fire also extended partially into the interior, the eves, and the attic space. The siding was cedar shake and required hours of overhaul to extinguish hot spots and to strip the roof and the building. 13 Engine cleared the fire at 1930 hours. Box Alarm - Engines 13, 4, 17 Truck 6 Batt 4 Special Alarm - Engine 23 C Shift on Arson Fire August 10th - At 0002 Hours, multiple calls were received for a house on fire at 2207 42nd Avenue. 17 Engine arrived with heavy fire from a single family dwelling. Using multiple hand lines units gained entry and knocked the fire. The fire was allegedly caused by a domestic situation and resulting arson. 13 Engine was assigned RIT and assisted with various fire ground activities, and returned after 1 hour. Box Alarm - Engines 17, 18, 13 Truck 6 Batt 4 C Shift on Second fire of the Shift August 6th - At 2217 Hours units were alerted for a possible house on fire at 2555 35th Avenue. 17 Engine arrived with nothing showing, but upon further investigation units found extensive fire in the attic and roof framing. The house required extensive overhaul, with fire in many void spaces. 13 Engine cleared in 1 1/2 hours. Box Alarm - Engines 17, 13, 18 Truck 6 Batt 4 C Shift on House Fire August 6th - At 1802 Hours Units were alerted for smoke coming from the building at 2280 East 21st Street. 4 Engine arrived on scene with heavy smoke from a two story vacant Victorian. Units found heavy fire in the attic. 13 Engine arrived on scene and assisted units with opening up the ceilings and the roof, and assisted in extinguishing the fire. The fire was reportedly caused by a homeless person using an open fireplace. 13 Engine returned in one hour. Box Alarm - Engines 4, 16, 13 Truck 2 Batt 4 A Shift on the Second Alarm August 2nd - At 0535 hrs, Companies from the 2nd/3rd Battalion were alerted for a reported structure fire in an 3 story Victorian apartment at 612 East 10th Street. 4 Engine arrived on scene with light smoke showing, but found extensive fire throughout the walls on both 1st and 2nd floors. Units opened up walls and extinguished various room and contents fires. 13 Engine searched and assisted with various fireground activities, returning in 30 minutes. Other units were held for extensive overhaul. Box Alarm - Engines 4, 12, 16 Truck 2 Batt 2 Second Alarm - Engines 13, 1, 10 Truck 1 Batt 4 Air 19 B Shift on Extrication July 25th - At 0150 Hours, 13 Engine was alerted for a reported vehicle accident at 29th Ave and Foothill Blvd. 13 arrived with a single vehicle accident with 3 people trapped, and all critically injured. While the officer requested the rescue assignment, the crew worked to free the victims with the Halligan and Axe. One Patient had an open skull fracture and the others also had serious head injuries and multiple fractures, and were all transported to Highland Trauma. The driver, which had fled the scene was found later and also taken to Highland. All patients were listed in critical condition, except for the driver. Assignment - Engines 13, 18 Truck 6 Batt 4 A Shift on First Due Third Alarm. July 24th - At 1235 Hours, multiple calls were received for a reported duplex on fire at 3320/3328 Brookdale Ave, near the top end of 13 Engines District. Engine 16 and 13 arrived almost simultaneously, with heavy fire showing from 2 floors and multiple exposure problems. Capt. DeLacy from 16 Engine requested a Second Alarm on arrival. 16 Engine pulled a line to the first floor, and 13 Engine pulled a line to the second floor. Battalion 4 called for a Third Alarm due to the exposures and victims present. The fire was knocked in about 15 minutes, and the Third Alarm Units were quickly cancelled. 13 Engine returned to quarters after about 3 hours. Box Alarm - Engines 13, 16, 17 Truck 6 Battalion 4 Second Alarm - Engines 18, 4, 12 Truck 2 Battalion 2, Air 19, Inv 4 Third Alarm - Engines 23, 1, 29 Battalion 3, Safety Officer LISTEN TO DISPATCH AUDIO FILE HERE B shift on First Due Cabinet Factory Fire July 22th - At 0902 Hours, 13 Engine was alerted for a reported grass fire at 900 Block of 38th Ave. Upon arrival they found a working fire in a cabinet warehouse/factory, with the workers still inside pulling cabinets from the warehouse. A box was requested and 13 made their attack, finding 3 rooms well involved, with hazardous chemicals and heavy fire loading from the construction materials inside. The fire was knocked prior to the arrival of other units, as many units were out of position. Overhaul was extensive for 13 Engine and 6 Truck , who remained on the scene for 4 hours. 13 Engine finally returned to quarters at 1400 hours.
