A Shift on 2 Fires within 4 hours

November 27th - At 1534 Hrs, units from the 3rd and 4th Battalion
were alerted for a report of an Apartment on fire at 2922 Capp St.
 13 Engine arrived to find a working fire on the second floor of a
multiple dwelling.  The fire was quickly extinguished, and
confined to room and contents.  The second fire was at 1827
hours, and was a top floor fire in an occupied Victorian Multiple
Dwelling.  The fire extended through walls, but crews were able
to stop it quickly.

B Shift on Second Alarm







November 19th - At around 1930 hours, units were alerted for a
House Fire with multiple calls being recieved.  16 Engine arrived
with heavy fire from the front of a 2 story Victorian with
exposure to an adjacent Apartment building, and quickly called
for additional units.  13 Engine arrived as the extra Engine and
assumed RIT duties, assisting with ladders and line advacement.
 Efforts to extingush this fire were made extremely difficult due
to extreme pack-rat conditions, and a triple thick plywood attic.

Oakland Firefighters Injured in Flashover








While operating at a 3 story apartment fire at 3833 Telegraph
Ave, a flashover occurred, injuring Lt Darryl Liggins, FF Tim
Takis and FF Walter Martinez.  All members were seen at the
Burn Center and one member will be in the hospital for over a
week.  The members of 13 Engine would like to extend our best
wishes to these firefighters, and express our hope for a speedy
recovery.

B Shift on Glassblowing Factory Fire
October 17th - At 0345 hrs, multiple calls were received for a
warehouse on fire at 1202 57th Ave.  18 Engine arrived to find
fire showing from the roof of a large warehouse.  Upon
investigation, the fire was found to be confined to a glass
furnace and large roof area.  Engine 13 was assigned RIT.

B Shift on 2nd Alarm Vacant Victorian Fire
October 14th - At 2140 hours, units were alerted for a reported
house on fire at 1241 50th Ave.  18 Engine arrived to find a
vacant 2 Victorian with heavy smoke showing.  13 Engine
assisted advancing 18's line, pulled a second line to protect
exposures, forced entry into adjacent warehouse and assisted
18  Engine and 6 Truck with overhaul.

B Shift First Due on 2 Victorian Fire - 3 Alarms
October 8th - At around 2230 Hours, multiple calls were received
for a reported house on fire at 1764 24th Ave.  13 Engine arrived
with heavy fire showing from a 4 story Victorian multiple
dwelling that had extended to another Victorian adjacent to the
first.  Second and third alarms were quickly called.  The Units on
scene used multiple hand lines to control the fire, which was
made more difficult due to "interesting" construction techniques
and additions.  

A Shift First Due on 5th Alarm Warehouse/Multiple Dwelling Fire









October 2nd - At around 0300 Hours, multiple calls were
received for a reported warehouse fire at 2828 Ford Street in an
industrial area of the Fruitvale.  13 Engine arrived on scene in
minutes finding a 1 story carpet shop with fire through the roof,
and immediately asked for a second alarm.  Due to very heavy
fire loading in the carpet store, fire quickly extended to a large 2
Story Metal Plating shop with a recording studio on the 2nd floor
and rear adjacent buildings.  Crews attempted an interior attack
on both the carpet store and the 2 Story metal plating shop, but
fire quickly caused a collapse in the carpet store and heavy
involvement in the bowstring trusses of the 2 story Metal Shop.  
Crew had 4 ladder Pipes, 3 Deck Guns, Multiple monitors and
hand lines, and after 4 hours had the fire under control.

Violence in Oakland continues
September 29th -  At 0730 hrs 13 Engine responded for a
reported shooting at 25th Ave and E10th Street,  When 13 arrived
they found a Brinks Armoured Guard shot to death during a
robbery.  An unknown amount of money was taken.  This is the
18th Homicide and 25th Shooting just for 13 Engine in 4 1/2
Months.  Oakland has had 118 murders as of 10-2

13 Engine becomes a double engine house










After spending over a month at the quarters of 16 Engine while
our station had asbestos removed, 16 is spending a while with
us making for some tight quarters, as a house normally with 4
people has now has 8.

B Shift on House Fire
June 18th - At 0555 hrs, calls were received for a house on fire at
1845 East 20th Street in Upper Jingletown.  4 Engine arrived with
a working fire in the back of the house with access problems.  13
Engine assisted in advancing hose lines and checking for
extension.  4 Engine quickly knocked the fire, which was
confined to the sundeck and exterior rear of the building.

B shift on Small Arson Fire









June 4th - At 1745 hrs, units were alerted for reported smoke
from the building at 3585 Grey Street.  Engine 13 arrived to find a
small bungelow with smoke showing.  After forcing entry, 13  
Engines crew found a 2 small set fires that were quickly put out.  
Apparently in these tight fiscal times, and with the prices of gas
as high as they are, using more than 1/2 of a soda can of gas is
just too expensive.

B shift on 2 Story Mixed Occupancy fire
May 20th - At 0610 hours, units from the 2nd and the 3rd battalion
were alerted for a reported structure fire with people trapped at
7th Ave and International Blvd.  Engine 4 arrived on scene with
fire showing from the second floor of a Victorian commercial
occupancy, with apartments on the 2nd floor.  13 Engine was
special called to assist.  4 Engine and 2 Truck knocked the fire
quickly, and stopped the spread through the attic by quickly
opening the roof.  13 Engine checked for extension on the floor
below, and went in service in 20 minutes.

OOPS







Some recent driving mistakes by our residents.  In this first
photo, a young lady forgot which pedal was the brake and which
was the gas.  In the next photo, a truck forgot that power poles
aren't meant to be driven through...but apparently they can be
suspended 20 feet in the air.

C Shift on arrives First on Apt Fire
May 13th - At 2345 hrs, Units were alerted for a reported
Apartment on fire at 2128 E27th Street in Upper Jingletown,
13 Engine arrived first, and reported a working fire on the 2nd
floor of a 2 story apartment building.  Along with assistance from
surrounding companies, 13 Engine knocked the fire quickly.  
After overhaul, 13 cleared in 90 minutes.

The members of Engine Company 13 would like to express our  
sorrow at the passing of Tom Brennan, a leader in the American
Fire Service, retired FDNY Captain and former Editor of Fire
Engineering Magazine.

A Shift on Small Fire
April 22nd - At 1700 hours, companies responded for a report of
an apartment on fire at 4909 Tidewater Drive.  First arriving units
found smoke showing from an apartment complex, upon
investigation, companies found and extinguished a small fire
and also the fire that had extended through the walls of the units.

Major Wave of Violence strikes Fruitvale
While never a calm area, the Greater Fruitvale does not normally
see this level of violence, outside of hot summer nights.  In the
period of April 16th - April 23rd, 8 critical shootings occurred,
with 3 being fatal.  This is part of a continuing violent year in
Oakland, with more than 50 murders already this year, almost
double this time last year .

B Shift on House Fire
April 14th - At 1502 hours, units were alerted for a reported
house on fire at 4715 Foothill Blvd.  18 Engine  arrived to find a
working basement fire in a 2 story house.  13 Engine arrived and
initially assumed RIT, forcing doors, assisting hose line
advancement and then assisted with pulling ceilings and other
overhaul.

C Shift on Extrication/Police Chase/MCI
March 29th - At 1115 Hours, units were dispatched to a reported
extrication at Coolidge Ave and Harold Street in the Diamond
District.  Prior to arrival OPD had requested 4 ambulances for
multiple critical victims. 13 arrived to find a 3 vehicle crash with
multiple people trapped and 4 critical patients.  While 6 Truck
began to extricate the patients, the IC requested the Heavy
Rescue, and 2 additional Engine Companies.  The patients were
extricated in 30 minutes, and taken to various trauma centers.  
The crash was as a result of a police chase through a residential
neighborhood.

C Shift on Apartment Fire
March 22nd - At 1630 Hours units were alerted for a reported
Apartment on fire at 1943 47th Ave.  18 Engine arrived and found
a large outside fire that extended into the walls and attic of the
building.  13 Engine assisted with hoseline advancement and
pulled ceilings. 13 went in service in about 1 hour.

B Shift on Apartment Fire
March 12th - At 1530 Hrs, units from the 3rd/4th Battalion were
alerted for a reported apartment on fire at 2100 Melrose Ave.  18
Engine arrived with smoke showing from a 5 story Apartment
building.  13 Engine, dispatched as a Special Called Engine,
arrived as 17 Engine was bringing people out of the building via
ladders while 6 Truck and 23 Engine were assisting people,
giving them their SCBA's to evacuate them out of the building.
The fire was confined to one unit. 13 assisted in searching the
floor above the fire, and opening up walls.

B Shift on House Fire










February 16th - At 2012 hours, multiple calls were received for a
house on fire at 2315 27th Ave.  As Engine 13 was responding up
27th Ave, a truck stopped dead in our path completely blocking
our way.  Since 13 then had to re-route around the very
intelligent truck driver, they ended up right behind 4 Engine as
they arrived.  4 and 13 found light smoke showing from a house,
but upon entry, found a working fire in the front few rooms. 13
assisted 4 Engine in extinguishing the fire, and after overhaul,
cleared 1 1/2 hours later.

C Shift on Grain Silo Fire







February 15th - At 0355 hours, a report was received of a fire in a
grain silo at ConAgra Foods Processing Plant in 13 Engines First
Due at 2201 East 7th St.  13 Engine arrived with nothing showing,
but with a frantic employee out front.  A fire was found to be in
the bottom of the 6 Story structure, but as they are solid
materials, with no access, 2 Truck had to use their aerial ladder
to make a "flying standpipe" to put the fire out.  After a fairly
difficult operation of about 2 hours, 13 Engine returned to
quarters.

B Shift on Apartment Fire
February 13th - At 1813 hours, units were alerted for a report of
smoke in the rear of a building at High and Masterson.  17 Engine
arrived on scene at 4228 Masterson to find heavy fire from a
lower unit of a 2 story multiple dwelling.  13 Engine searched the
second floor, and checked for extension.  13 cleared in 30
minutes.

B Shift on Small Warehouse Fire
February 2nd - At 0126 Hours units were alerted for an unknown
fire in the vicinity of High Street and San Leandro Street.  Engine
18 arrived to find an outside fire extending into an adjacent
warehouse.  Engine 13 assisted with a search and opening up
walls/overhaul.  13 returned in 1 1/2 hours.  Later that night, 13
Engine was also dispatched on a second alarm fire at a bakery.  
They stood by and were released 30 minutes later.

B Shift on Apartment Fire
January 30th -  At 0212 Hours, multiple calls were received for
smoke coming from an apartment building at 3809 Penniman
Ave.  Engine 17 arrived with smoke showing from a 2 story
Multiple Dwelling.  Fire Was found to be in the walls on the first
floor.  13 Engine pulled a line to the second floor, forced
apartments above the fire and searched with 6 Truck, and also
opened walls and ceilings.  13 Engine returned after 2 hours.

B Shift on Basement Fire










January 26th - At 2130 hrs, units were alerted for a reported
unknown fire in the area of Congress St and 40th Ave in the
Melrose District.  Engine 18 arrived on scene with a single story
duplex with heavy smoke showing.  13 Engine was initially
assigned RIT, but was then instructed to do a search on the rear
apartment and to open up walls and ceilings.  The fire was found
in the basement, and quickly knocked.  13 Engine returned after
1 hour.

4 People Shot in Continuing Gang War
January 21st - At 2214 Hours 13 Engine was alerted for a
reported shooting at the corner of 37th Ave and International
Blvd.  After responding, Dispatch advised that there were 4
People shot.  They arrived to find 4 people in a car, with one
shot in the head, and others with extremity wounds.  18 Engine
and Battalion 4 also assisted on this incident.

A Shift on Basement Fire
January 19th - At 2232 hours units were alerted for a reported
house on fire at 1423 52 Ave.  As 13 Engine was already out of
the firehouse, and in the area, they arrived first to find smoke
coming from a duplex.  After having some initial difficulty finding
the fire, and difficult ventilation conditions due to bars on
windows and plywood coverings, companies were able to find
the basement fire and quickly knock it.

B Shift on Second Alarm Explosion/Fire










January 17th - At 1439 Hrs, 4 Engine was alerted for an outside
fire at 1440 9th Ave.  They arrived on scene with a propane tank
with exposure to the house, and called for a box alarm.  Right
after this transmission, the propane tank exploded, sending fire
throughout the house, and almost immediately, the house was
75 percent involved, with two serious exposures in the form of
apartment buildings less than 2 feet away.  A second alarm was
quickly called.  13 Engine arrived on scene and vented, pulled
exposure lines, and searched exposure buildings.  After this, 13
went inside to help pull ceilings, which considering the attic was
fully involved as well, needed many companies.  Due to the
excellent work by all companies, the fire was held to one
dwelling, with only minor exposure damage. After extensive
overhaul, 13 cleared in 3 1/2 hours.

C Shift on Apartment Fire
January 15th - At 2007 Hours, units were alerted for a report of
smoke from the building at 1918 42 Ave.  First on scene units
found smoke showing from a 2 story apartment building.  
Companies found fire running the walls in both units, and 13
Engine assisted in opening up walls and ceilings, and returned
after 1 hour.

Gang Violence starts again
Once again, gang violence is on the upswing in the Fruitvale.  
On January 14th, a 15 year old boy was gunned down at
midnight at the corner of 23rd Ave and East 15th Street, he was
pronounced dead at the scene. On the 15th, at 2300 hrs, two
more teens were shot, one fatally.

A Shift makes rescue on Apartment Fire
January 11th - At 0335 Hours, units were alerted with multiple
calls for an apartment on fire at 2354 Fruitvale Ave with possible
someone trapped.  13 Engine arrived on scene with smoke
showing from a 2 story apartment building.  After forcing the
door, Lt. Fraticelli (detailed officer, normally at 4 Eng A shift), FF
Moreno, and FF Sierra found an elderly women overcome by
smoke.  After pulling her out, the fire was quickly knocked, and
confined to one apartment.
