C shift on Small Fire July 11th - At 0524 Hrs 3rd/4th Batt units were alerted for a reported house on fire behind 4140 Brookdale Ave. 17 Engine arrived with heavy fire to the rear of a structure with exposures. A illegal living space that had been converted was found and units knocked the fire quickly. 13 Engine assisted with hoselines and water supply as the extra company. Box Alarm - Engines 17, 18, 23 Truck 6 Batt 4 Special Call - 13 Engine C Shift on House Fire June 28th - At 1116 Hours, units from the 4th Battalion were alerted for a house on fire at 2709 Inyo Ave. Engine 4 arrived on scene with heavy fire showing from a Single Family Dwelling and exposure problems. Engine 13 arrived second, assisted with fire attack and pulling a back-up line. Units were held for extensive overhaul, with 13 Engine clearing in 2 hours. Box Alarm - Engines 16, 4, 13 Truck 2 Batt 4 Special Alarm - Engine 24 B Shift on House Fire June 24th - At 1402 hrs, multiple calls were received for a house on fire at 1717 Bridge Ave. Engine 18, due to a problem hydrant was held up, and Engine 13 arrived a split second before them with heavy fire showing from a single family dwelling. The crews, working together stretched a 200 ft 1 3/4 inch hand line to the fire, which was contained to two rooms in the rear. 6 Truck opened to roof as crews advanced and the fire was knocked in about 10 minutes. Units were held for about 3 hours for extensive overhaul. Box Alarm - Engine 18, 13, 17 Truck 6 Batt 4 Engine assists on Apartment Fire June 23rd - At 2251 hours, Units from the 4th were alerted for a reported apartment of fire at 1935 East 30th Ave. 4 Engine arrived on scene with heavy fire from a 2nd story apartment. 13 Engine assisted as the RIT team and various other duties, and went in serivce after about 1 hour. Box Alarm - Engine 4, 16, 13 Truck 2 Batt 4 Last day of school brings hooliganism June 22nd - The last day of school in Oakland has in recent times involved the setting of fires in the school to "celebrate" graduation. Engines 13, 16, 17 and 18 were kept busy with the largest fire being at Brett Harte Jr. High involving a room and contents fire in the boys locker room. Engine assists on Apartment Fire June 16th - At 1804 hrs, Units from the 4th Battalion were alerted for multiple reports of an apartment on fire at 1652 E. 32nd St. 4 Engine arrived first with fire showing from a third story apartment. With the assistance of 2 Truck opening up, and 16 Engine them up, the fire was knocked in about 10 minutes. 13 Engine was assigned RIT duties and assisted with utilities and other fireground activities. Box Alarm - Engine 16, 4, 13 Truck 2 Batt 4 Engine assists on Store Fire June 11th - At 1702 hours units from the 4th Battalion were alerted for a report of smoke from the roof of a corner market. Battalion 4 arrived on scene and reported smoke showing from a 1 story commercial. The fire was found to be in the walls and void spaces. 2 Truck went to work opening up the roof line and walls, which between the stucco walls and the tar roof, took a lot of labor . 13 Engine, initially assigned as RIT, assisted with salvage and overhaul. First Due Fire for B shift June 9th - At 2043 hours Units from the 3rd/4th Battalion were alerted for a reported house on fire at 1616 36th Ave in the Fruitvale. 13 Engine arrived to find a fully involved attached garage with extension to the house. 13 Engines crew with the assistance of 18 Engine, advanced a 1 3/4 line into the structure. 18 Engine also advanced a second 1 3/4 line for backup. The fire involved numerous propane tanks that were leaking in the garage as well as numerous paint cans and other flammable objects. The fire had extended to the attic and living spaces, and due to the attic being used as storage, the fire was difficult to get to, because in addition to sheetrock, plywood had been laid down. 13 Engine cleared after about 3 hours. Box Alarm - Engines 13, 18, 17 Truck 6 Batt 4 Special Alarm - Engine 29 Website was unable to be updated..will resume shortly Third Fire of the day for C shift April 29th - At 2037 hours, Engine 13 and other 4th battalion units were alerted for a report of an apartment on fire at 2567 Foothill Blvd. Truck 2 arrived first with smoke showing from an apartment complex. Prior to the arrival of any other unit, the truck used a house line to contain the fire. Engine 13 arrived and due to the long stretch, used a 200 ft line as well as 100 ft of a standpipe pack. The fire was quickly extinguished, and Engine 13 overhauled the building and left after about 3 hours. Box Alarm - Engine 13, 4, 16 Truck 6 Battalion 4 Second fire of the day for C Shift April 29th - At 1706 hours, units were alerted for a report of a house on fire at 4419 Bancroft Ave. 18 Engine arrived with smoke showing from a single family residence. Units found a attic fire, which was quickly extinguished. Engine 13 assisted with fire attack, and pulled ceilings, and returned home after 30 minutes. Box Alarm - Engines 18, 13, 29 Truck 6 Battalion 4 C shift on First Due House Fire April 29th - At 1057 Hrs Engine 13 was alerted for a report of a house on fire at 3511 Lyon Ave. Engine 13 arrived with smoke showing from a 2 story home. Upon making entry, a room and contents fire was found, and quickly extinguished by 150 ft of 1 3/4 line. After checking for extension and overhaul, units cleared after about 90 minutes. Box Alarm - Engines 13, 16, 18 Truck 6 Battalion 4 A Shift on First Due Second Alarm with People Trapped April 22nd - At 0053 Hrs multiple calls were received for a reported apartment on fire with people trapped at 1536 Fruitvale Ave, about 5 blocks from the firehouse. Upon arrival Engine 13 found a three story apartment building with heavy fire showing from two units on two floors. Prior to arrival, the occupant had jumped from the second story. Engine 13's crew proceeded to advance a 200 ft 1 3/4 line into the structure. Engine 13 had difficulty advancing the line due to a large hole in the floor of the most involved apartment. The next in units advanced second and third lines, and trucks opened up and searched. The fire was knocked after about 25 minutes and Engine 13 returned to quarters after about 3 hours. The website will be updated as soon as he returns. B Shift arrives First on 17 Box March 26th - At 1409 Hrs Engine 13 was alerted for a reported structure fire at 2120 Sonoma Way. Dispatched second, Engine 13 arrived first with a 2 story house with smoke showing from the second floor. The 150 ft preconnect was stretched, and the fire was knocked in about 10 minutes, confined to the master bedroom and the adjoining rooms. 13 Engine was released after about 3 hours. In addition, an excellent book on the history of the Oakland Fire Department written by Captain Geoffrey Hunter is now available at Amazon.com HERE B Shift on First Due Triplex Fire March 8th - At 1047 Hrs, Units from the 3rd/4th Battalion were alerted for a report of smoke from the building in the 1400 block of 37th Ave. Engines 18 and 13 arrived at the same time to find heavy fire and smoke showing from the second floor of a 1900's era Victorian Triplex. Engine 13's crew took the 200 foot line and with the assistance of 18 Engines crew advanced the line inside. The units on fire had stacks of clothes, books, tables and various debris strewn everywhere, which made the fire very difficult to locate. Once the debris blocking the door to the fire area was breached, Engine 13 found heavy fire in 4 rooms and also involving the attic and roof area. The fire was knocked after about 15 minutes. Extensive overhaul was required for this structure and units cleared after 5 hours. Box Alarm - Engines 13, 18, 16 Truck 6 Batt 4 Special Alarm - Engine 16 A Shift on Second Alarm Apartment Fire March 7th - At 1645 hrs, Engine 18 was alerted for a report of a car fire at 4401 San Leandro Blvd, en route the assignment was upgraded to a box. Engine 18 arrived with 2 fully involved vehicles in a carport with heavy fire showing from the converted warehouse with 3 story lofts above. Engine 13 arrived second and while 18 was putting the vehicle fires out, stretched a line down the alley and through a courtyard to access the entrance to the apartment. Engine 13 then was able to advance their hoseline to the involved apartment, where the dwelling was mostly involved and had even burnt through the floor and roof in sections. There was heavy fire on all floors of the apartment, with room access very difficult. A second alarm was struck at this time. This was a difficult hose stretch that required many people and multiple hose packs. After the fire was knocked, Engine 13 performed hours of overhaul. Box Alarm - Engines 18, 13,29 Truck 6 Batt 4 Second Alarm - Engines 23, 25 Truck 2 Batt 2, Air 2 C Shift Third Due on Victorian Fire March 6th - At 2032 hrs, Engine 13 was alerted third due for a reported structure fire at 1442 8th Ave. Engine 4 arrived on scene with heavy smoke showing from a 2 1/2 story Victorian. Engine 13 arrived third and assumed the RIT duties. Engine 13 cleared after 1 hour. Box Alarm - Engines 4,16,13 Truck 2 Batt 2 Wave of Gun Violence hits the Fruitvale March 5th - In an area not known for gunfights (stabbings being the norm), the last week has been out of the ordinary. The week started off with a fatal shooting in the 2100 block of 26th Ave, followed by 3 more shootings during the week, and ended last night with a shooting in the 1800 block of 27th Ave. Units arrived to find a large hostile crowd and an 18 year old male with single gunshot wound to his abdomen. The patient later died of his injuries. New Additions Photos from 2001-2003 added as well as a Links Page and Guest book A shift Second Due on House Fire February 26th - At 1250 Hrs Engine 13 was alerted for a report of smoke from the building at 1012 E. 12th Street. 4 Engine arrived on scene with heavy smoke showing from the basement of a 2 story Victorian. After stretching a line, heavy fire was found in the basement. Engine 13 arrived, pulled a second line and assisted in fire attack. When the fire was knocked, 13 assisted in overhaul and secondary searches. Engine 13 cleared in 1 hour. Box Alarm - Engines 4, 13, 16 Truck 2 Battalion 2 A Shift on First Due House February 20th - At 0802 hours, Engine 13 and other 3rd/4th Battalion units were alerted for a report of a house on fire at 3132 Davis street. Engine 13 arrived with heavy smoke showing. Fire was found to be running the floor space between the first and second floors. A hose line was stretched and 6 Truck opened up the floors and walls. After extensive overhaul, Engine 13 cleared after 2 hours. Box Alarm -Engines 13, 18, 17 Truck 6 Batt 4 First Due House Fire at A/B Shift Change February 18th - While on a prior call for a commercial fire alarm, Engine 13 was alerted for a first due structure fire at 1401 24th Ave on the border of 4 and 13 Engines districts. 4 Engine arrived and reported a 2 story house with fire showing from the second floor. Engine 13 arrived shortly thereafter and assisted 4 with fire attack, searches and overhaul. 13 Engine cleared in 1 hour. Box Alarm - Engines 13, 4, 16 Truck 2 Battalion 4 A Shift on First Due House Fire February 8th - At 1440 hours, Engine 13 was dispatched to 2341 27th Ave for the report of a house on fire. E13 arrived with heavy smoke from the attic. Fire was knocked quickly with 200 ft 1 3/4 line. E13 then began overhaul and assisted with roof operations. The Engine went ready after 2 1/2 hours. Box Alarm - Engines 13, 16, 18 Truck 6 Batt 4 B Shift Third Alarm Apartment February 3rd - At 2052 hours, units from the 4th Battalion were alerted for a report of an apartment building on fire at 1236 E. 17th St. Engine 4 arrived with heavy smoke and fire showing from the third floor. Engine 13 was alerted as an extra engine company, and shortly thereafter a second, then a third alarm was struck due to the number of residents still in the building as well as water supply issues. Engine 13 assisted with back up fire attack and remained on the scene for about 1 hour.
